Green Tara (Sanskrit: Syamatara; Tibetan: Sgrol-ljang), known as the Buddha of enlightened activity, offers succour and protection from all the unfortunate circumstances one can encounter within the samsaric world. Tara is regarded as a Buddha of compassion and action. She can be seen as the female aspect of Avalokitesvara, and in some origin stories she comes from his tears, but she has older antecedents as a Mother Goddess, before Avalokitesvara and the Bodhisattva ideal emerged.

Green Tara is usually portrayed with her right leg coming forward, symbolising her active participation in helping sentient beings. As an emanation of the "self-born" Buddha Amitabha, an image of Amitabha is sometimes depicted in Tara's headdress. Her right hand displays the boon-granting gesture and her left portrays the hand gesture of refuge.

In her hands she also holds utpalas, closed blue lotuses which symbolise purity and power.
